assessment time #2

Its that time again...the dreaded assessment, so what have I been doing?
well...

Flickr
In this time I've joined a couple of groups which have provided a bit of inspiration for me, for uni and to encourage me to get my ass overseas next year...but I will say that flickr is one of my favourite tools now, as I have family and friends who live miles away and I can show them my work and what I've been up too. Of course I think my flickr photos are interesting, I wouldn't post them. I have had a few comments from people about them and have recently pushed my photos to a couple of groups to see what others who don't know me think of them. One of the bad things was the lack of community encouragement and comments from general mpi104 group members, and i know i am guilty, but the idea of posting a screen shot of the desktop on my beautiful G5 just to have something to say Ive done doesn't inspire me. Maybe constructive criticism of work would have been a better option! Or maybe it was just my photos that didn't get commented from MPI students. all in all though, ive gone beyond the MPI group and am defiantly starting to incorporate as a tool in my everyday Internet use.

Del.icio.us

At assessment #1 I did admit that I hadn't incorporated del.icio.us into my work flow as much as I could have, however increasingly I have found myself going there to find pages I remember that I liked, and tagging sites as I find them. Also trying to make it more interesting by tagging a wider range of sites.

Blogger
after looking at too many websites and bloggs to mention (but you can check out my screen shots on flickr) for aesthetically pleasing designs and working out that clean easy to read sites were the way to go, I changed my template and messed around with the colouring of it. I wanted it uncluttered like the post a secret blog, but easy to read and simple like the love website. With these things in mind I still wanted colour to emphasize important points, hence the use of red on the white background for titles. I am a fan of having the side bar on the left, and onnly having it on that side, I think the page appears less cluttered and is easier to read, and you don't have to go looking all over the shop for things like links, technorati, counters and profiles, you know they will be on that side or not there at all.

All in all I know that I have tried my best to become involved in the online communities I have become apart of. Making comments on other peoples pictures and bloggs, and saving links for other people.
So its just up to you if you agree if my interestingness is your interestingness Joh!
Goodluck to me!

who likes me...

I want to know how many people visit my blog, so I put a sitemeter on my blog, this is useful because i want to know how interesting I am, what sort of blog reader is interesting in me. Where they are from and how they found my site. I went with sitemeter because they were easy to find and use and a friend said they were good and send you weekly updates-which they do.
I have had 59 visitors, all from Australia except 2, 1 from Poland and one from Portugal. Interesting!
a few have been referred by google, and a couple from technorati, and even one from my del.ici.ous site but most are through the ma-ba metablog!
I guess the more interesting and the more posts about different things I put the wider variety of people I can expect.

technorati

oh technorati...what a confusing little time ive had trying to work you out...this has to be one of the worst explained websites there is, or maybe because i do everything on myspace now i am slightly retarded when it comes to any other site!oh dear-time to get away from myspace!
Aside from that little rant i think ive got it sorted.
So aside from being a "search engine for blogs" i think it provides an online community for like minds. My house mate was asking me what the point was for having a search engine for blogs, I told him that a lot of the sites that i use are actually blogs, for music lovers ect...blogs are not just people having a rant about their lives which he informed me that was good cause as if we care about other peoples lives- but thats the thing, he might not but someone else does. Aside from that technorati can bring people to your blog, by making them aware of it.
Technorati is a search engine for blogs, videos and photos, thats how it differs from google. Instead of getting a bunch of sponsored sites or information sites, it is blogs about what you have searched for. It also has the ability to save or "favorite" each blog you like so you can see the most recent post on each and keep up with them.
At this point in time my ranking is 846,558. Ranking is derived from the number of sources referencing my blog.
My authority is 6, this is determined by the number of unique links to my blog made within the last 180 days. so im pretty low down on the scale...i guess i need to add more interestingness to my blog!
Out of the top 100 blogs on technorati, i was bored looking at them, i found most of them soooo plain, but then most of them at the top were about news so i guess they have to be serious. they were easy to read, and navigate though which is good. Check out my screen shots and thoughts on the top 100 here.

If i say... do you say its aesthetically pleasing

Aesthetics is what each person finds visually pleasing. This is different for each person as their tastes will vary depending on personal influences.

As for the websites i like and dislike:
I love the soulwax website it is easy to navigate, while still creating enough interest to keep you occupied and online. each little piece expands out to give more information which i find more interesting that just scrolling down a page full of text! i like the use of black and white with simple burst of color, i think it works really well on this site. i also think that modular people website provides an interesting solution to the boring straight us and down websites that no longer catch my attention! It uses lots of basic bright colours and simple readable text which is unusual for modular-as they are all about being arty and cutting edge to the point where some of there text in their magazine i totally unreadable, and hurts you head to try-but this attracts the kiddies and makes the the coolest of the cool, so who am i to bag it out. The website is awesome though, informative, interesting and visual pleasing.
As for websites that need a helping hand aesthetically... Id have say..
the best website in the world is really very funny,i was crying from laughing so much, but also crying from the colour use...yellow and white text (especially the yellow) on black background, i had to squint to read it and even ten it was hurting my eyes. Its is boring set out...just heading, though when you go into each post there are pictures and different text colour, but even the text in there is badly coloured. It uses a sad off white slightly orange colour. Its just really ugly. it doesnt create much interest for people just browsing, but with 190,371,308 views...i guess attracting new viewers is not a huge priority.
The worst thing i have ever seen is this site aside from being a "jesus loving" site, which may be what some people like, but for me being told its jesus was or eternal hell isnt my idea of fun reading. And after seeing it i have only one thought- if jesus was so awesome maybe he would have given these people better skills at design. Instead he made them blind, and that is why this horrid bright, moving background was put on there..i cant tell you much else about it, i was too busy throwing up from looking at it for 2 seconds, but that should say it all!

XML&RSS=WTF

So i think after much brain struggling i may have this worked out....

XML stands for Extensible Markup Language and is used to aid in the structuring, storing and sending of data without being restricted by compatible information systems. Users can create any tags needed to describe their information.

RSS stands for Rich Site Summery, Really Simple Syndication or RDF Site Summary depending which format you are using. It shows you updated information on your favorite sites. It is important because it provides a fast way to keep up with your favorite blogs and websites, you don't need to join every page, and try to remember login detains for each one, and you don't need to visit each site individually to check for updates. To view the RSS feed you need software called a feed reader or aggregator.

I decided to go with Google reader, it wasn't a hard decision,i guess, i already have a Google account, i trust google, and it seemed much easier and more manageable with Google!
